School meal programs play a crucial role in improving children’s nutrition, health, and academic performance. According to an updated position paper from the Society for Nutrition Education (SNE), the American Dietetic Association (ADA), and the School Nutrition Association (SNA). The paper advocates for comprehensive and integrated school nutrition services and emphasizes that school meals serve as the foundation of coordinated school health programs.

The Role of School Nutrition in Student Success

The position paper, authored by nutrition experts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of California – Davis, and Bloomington Public Schools District 87, highlights the importance of embedding nutrition education into the school environment. This includes providing nutritious meals, promoting healthy food choices throughout the school campus, and reinforcing these habits at home and in the community.

“School-based nutrition education and promotion can help advance student academic performance,” the authors state. Research shows that when schools integrate nutrition education into classrooms and provide access to healthier food options, students tend to make better dietary choices, leading to improved focus, energy levels, and overall academic achievement.

Strengthening School Meal Programs and Wellness Policies

One of the key recommendations from the report is for local school wellness policies to support and strengthen comprehensive nutrition services. By forming multidisciplinary teams, schools can tailor their nutrition programs to meet the specific needs of their students, ensuring that meals and educational initiatives are both practical and sustainable.

“Food and nutrition practitioners are well poised to deliver integrated and comprehensive nutrition education and promotion programs that reflect a multi-level approach utilizing innovative and evidence-based strategies,” said SNE President Tracy Fox, MPH, RD.

A Call for Better Nutrition Standards in Schools

The authors of the position paper urge policymakers, educators, and health professionals to prioritize school meal programs and ensure they receive adequate funding. According to Fox, the goal is to make high-quality, evidence-based nutrition services the standard in every school.

“This position paper provides a roadmap to ensure that adequately funded comprehensive nutrition services are not just the ‘gold standard’ but the only standard in place in schools across the country,” she said.

With childhood nutrition closely linked to long-term health outcomes and academic success, experts argue that investing in substantial, well-funded school nutrition programs is beneficial and essential for students’ future well—being nationwide.
