Study Finds Link Between Healthy Fats and Intelligence

A new study from the University of Illinois suggests that monounsaturated fatty acids of healthy fats. MUFAs —found in foods like olive oil, nuts, and avocados—are linked to higher general intelligence. Researchers discovered that this connection is driven by how MUFAs influence in key brain network involved in attention and problem-solving. The findings, published in NeuroImage, add to growing evidence that diet plays a crucial role in cognitive function.

How Nutrition and Healthy Fats Influences Brain Function

The study analyzed data from 99 healthy older adults recruited through Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Researchers examined blood samples to measure fatty acid levels. This is used in functional MRI scans to assess brain activity, and conducted general intelligence tests. They aimed to understand how dietary components influence the brain’s organization and cognitive performance.

“Our goal is to understand how nutrition might be used to support cognitive performance and study how nutrition influences brain function,” said lead researcher Aron Barbey, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois. “To develop nutritional interventions that enhance cognitive performance, we must understand the mechanisms behind these effects.”

MUFAs and Brain Network Efficiency

Inspired by previous studies on the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in MUFAs, the researchers focused on this group of fatty acids. They found that MUFAs were strongly linked to the efficiency of the dorsal attention network, a brain system responsible for attention-demanding tasks and everyday problem-solving.

Using a measure called small-world propensity, which describes how well different brain regions are connected locally and globally, the researchers found that higher levels of MUFAs were associated with greater neural efficiency in this network. Participants with better-organized dorsal attention networks tended to score higher on intelligence tests.

Potential for Future Research on Nutrition and Cognition

The findings suggest that MUFAs play a crucial role in brain function, specifically by enhancing the organization of intelligence-related networks. However, Barbey emphasized that more research is needed. Healthy Fats.

“Our results suggest that if we want to understand the relationship between MUFAs and general intelligence, we need to take the dorsal attention network into account,” Barbey said. “It’s part of the underlying mechanism that contributes to their relationship.”

Looking ahead, the researchers plan to conduct long-term intervention studies to determine whether sustained MUFA intake can actively improve brain network efficiency and cognitive performance over time.

“This gives us evidence of the mechanisms by which nutrition affects intelligence and opens exciting new directions for future research in nutritional cognitive neuroscience,” Barbey added.

The study reinforces the growing understanding that diet is critical to brain health. As research continues, MUFA-rich foods like olive oil, nuts, and avocados may become even more crucial in nutritional strategies to support cognitive function.
