Dermatologists Reveal the Right Way to Apply Skincare Products

Date:

Consumers spend hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of dollars each year on skincare products, hoping to improve their skin’s appearance. From anti-aging serums to acne treatments, people carefully select products they believe will be most effective. However, dermatologists say that the order in which these products are applied plays a crucial role in their effectiveness.

The Importance of Proper Application of Skincare Products

“Medications or treatments should be applied directly after washing your face,” explains Dr. Susan C. Taylor, a board-certified dermatologist and Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD). “This ensures that the skin properly absorbs the medications or treatments. Otherwise, people may think a product isn’t working simply because it’s applied in the wrong order.”

To get the best results from skincare products, Dr. Taylor recommends following a simple four-step routine:

  1. Wash your face – Use a gentle cleanser and pat the skin dry.
  2. Apply medication or treatment – If you use a prescription or over-the-counter treatment, apply it immediately after cleansing unless instructed otherwise by a dermatologist. When applying eye creams, use the ring finger, which applies the least pressure on the delicate skin around the eyes.
  3. Apply moisturizer and/or sunscreen – Hydrating and protecting the skin from the sun is essential to maintaining skin health.
  4. Apply makeup, if desired – Once the previous products have been absorbed, makeup can be applied.

Are Too Many Products Doing More Harm Than Good?

While layering multiple skincare products may seem like a good idea, dermatologists warn that using too many at once can irritate. “Using several products at the same time may not only negate the benefits of each product but also irritate the skin,” says Dr. Taylor. “Redness, stinging, and dryness are common side effects, especially when anti-aging products are involved. Ironically, this irritation can make signs of aging even more noticeable.”

Consulting a Dermatologist for the Best Skincare Routine

Consulting a dermatologist can benefit those unsure about which products to use or how to apply them correctly. A skincare professional can recommend a personalized regimen that balances effectiveness and skin tolerance, helping consumers get the best results without unnecessary irritation.

By following a proper application routine and avoiding product overload, consumers can maximize the benefits of their skincare products, ensuring healthier, more radiant skin.
